WHAT IS A DETOX?
a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances; detoxification.

Following this definition and popular portrayals of detox diets. People often assume a detox means abstaining from particular types of food, only eating one particular type of food, and perhaps not going out and/or drinking as much for a period of time. Although these are a detox of some sort they are unlikely to achieve what you want because you have not determined what you want to improve or detox from. There are 3 areas:
THE 3 REALMS OF HEALTH
Draw a triangle. Where the bottom , left is environment, the bottom right is exercise and the top is nutrition. When all is good these 3 work in harmony. But when one is out of whack it begins to distort the triangle and this you need more of the other two to bring back balance.
If you damaged a muscle training at the gym. you would look to repair via nurture and correct nutrition. However if you suffer mental stress, people think the way to solve it is via talking it out, often even more mental stress. While exploring the topic could be therapeutic, do not neglect your brains need for nutrition to maintains its natural balance. The word natural is key here, you may be prescribed meds to cure depression or stress but they promote levels and balances that are not natural to you? How often you hear “She’s doing better now but shes different than she was before the antidepressants”
MAKE YOUR OWN HEALTH TRIANGLE TO DETERMINE WHAT YOU NEED TO DETOX
Now revisit your life over last 3-4 weeks, any longer is fruitless as you are unlikely to remember the details. Examine your life in terms of nutrition, then environment, then exercise and ask yourself which statement from the below most matches your recent life.
A/ You have stuck to your ideal diet plan throughout the period
B/ For the most part you have stuck to your ideal diet plan but there have been several occasions where I have to break it
C/ I regularly do not eat what I would like to nutrition wise. I do not have an ideal or if I do I regularly miss meals or replace them with fast or lower quality alternatives
A/ My environment both home and work has been free from stress. I wake up relaxed and look forward to both work and going home
B/ One of my environments has either consistent stress or has experienced acute stress for a period of time
C/ My entire environment has either consistent stress or has experienced acute stress
A/ I regularly engage in physical exercise and my environment creates positive mental stimulation
B/ Physical exercise is sporadic and dependent upon my schedule and/or for the most part I am bored either at work or at home
C/ I rarely do physical exercise, and/or my work and homelife provide little to no mental stimulation

On the right is an example where Nutrition was A, Environment C and Exercise A. This would be typical of someone who has gone through some acute mental stress just as a disciplinary at work, or relationship problems.
It shows that to detox, first you have to fix the environment but because the triangle is out of whack you are going to focus even more than usual on exercise and nutrition. Simply getting away from the environment is not enough.
